In the small island state of Singapore where most people live in cramped high-rise housing, the keeping of the Koi carp is a flourishing hobby. The keeping of Koi in Singapore is a fairly recent development only emerging since the mid-1980's. Koi are seen as auspicious symbols by Singapore's predominantly Chinese population. Wealthy Singaporeans have been able to keep Koi in the compounds of their bungalows (see picture below). Over time, Singapore's middle classes have aspired to own these beautiful fish; the problem of course was where to keep them in a high-rise housing system.

As is true in business, some enterprising individual will always exploit a gap in the market and this has led to the concept of 'Koi hotels'. Koi hotel businesses are a collection of up to several hundred concrete Koi ponds that owners can rent to keep their fish. This concept is virtually unheard of in the rest of the world, but it is serving Singaporeans well. The monthly hotel rental for a 17,000 gallon pond is approximately £200. Owners visit their Koi at the weekend and hotel staff provide weekly care. The hotel rental however, does not include food or medical treatment. There are eight Koi farms in Singapore and most provide hotel services.

Fixed priced for Koi up to 30cm on first day including normal medication (extra charges for non-standard medication) & subsequent daily charges for hospitalisation. The Koi are looked after daily with tender loving care by the Summer Koi owners and staff.
